Over the last 3 decades in particular, I have been involved in various meetings/forums and conferences with a central theme of a customer first message. Prosperity will follow if we all adapt that key theme as the main pillar of main driver of success.

Over the weekend, I went for my normal morning runs of which are always a reflective part of any given day. The challenge I tackle constantly is do we really care and understand our client. Do we differentiate from our competitors by doing the small things well, do we go above and beyond to ensure our clients notice and value the effort?

Of course, living it requires effort, discipline, and above all, genuine care.

Last week I wrote about value versus cost—how true value isn’t simply what you pay but what you get in return. This week, I want to take that further. Because value isn’t just about price and delivery—it’s about whether we actually take the time to deeply understand our clients.

Do we really know them?

It’s not enough to know what our clients want. We have to know who they are:

  • Do we understand their business model?
  • Do we know who their competitors are and what pressures they face?
  • Do we have a grip on their pain points, both spoken and unspoken?

As IT Recruiters, this knowledge is not a “nice to have. Our role is not to fill a seat with a CV. It’s to place the right person, in the right career stage, with the right aspirations. Someone who not only ticks the competency boxes but also fits the culture, aligns with the client’s direction, and brings the right energy and mindset to thrive.

More than transactions

This is where true care comes in. You can’t fake it. Caring is about doing the hard yards for your client:

  • Going deeper in your conversations.
  • Spending time on their strategy, not just their job brief.
  • Ensuring you’re not just delivering talent but delivering solutions that move the dial for them.

A client doesn’t just remember that you delivered someone quickly. They remember that you understood them. They remember that you had their back.

When we combine understanding with care, the result is long-term trust. And trust is the real differentiator in recruitment. Well, in life really! Anyone can send resumes. Few can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their client, anticipating challenges, solving problems, and acting as a partner rather than a supplier.

That’s the challenge I set for myself and my team every day: do we really know our client, and do we truly care enough to deliver what matters most to them?

Words are cheap. But action, effort, and care? That’s where the real value lies.
